I think the special skill of the artist is to collect all of the emotional information of his or her culture, interpret it, and then share it. All 3 of these components must be in place if the effort is to be effective. Without truly studying culture, the work is not relevant. Without interpretation, it is copying. If it is not shared, it has no voice. The painting "Return of the Son," is inspired by the Rembrandt painting and parable of "The Return of the Prodigal Son," through author Henry Nouwen. The message is inclusive love. Within the disunity of the canvas is a caring face, and a loving hand.
